The coveted flutter! Would you like to know about 5 tips on how to do a flutter? Take note:
I would dare to say that the flutter is a hallmark of the oriental dance and its sisters and modern times daughters.
In this post I will give you 5 tips on how to do a flutter, taking into account that it is not easy or easily integrated (as other more natural or organic movements). It requires a process of visualization and a lot of self-awareness.
Most of all, BE PATIENT! In order to perform this movement, a lot of repetition and technique are required, as well as relaxation and calm.
TIP Nº1: RELAX YOUR CENTER OF GRAVITY
Firstly let’s start with the most simple: unlike almost the 100% of the dance movements, while performing a flutter, your belly, abdominal area and your center of gravity need to be relaxed.
You can meditate for a while before starting the practice, or simply focus on that part of your body and release tension until it’s relaxed.
Let’s get to an important point:
TIP Nº2: PRANAYAMA- BREATHING EXERCISES
Secondly, the breath. This has been of great importance in my own practice of the flutter, due to three reasons:
- Getting used to the movement of your diaphragm and ribs
- To create breathing patterns which create real habits when performing the flutter
- To create customs which can help you while performing
In other words, keep it up with your breath
TIP Nº3: APNEA-VACUUM
Thirdly training apnea or vacuum as a basic part of your practice. On one hand, this will open the space for the performance of the flutter, and on the other hand, it supports your pelvic floor.
It is of extreme importance for your training to be supervised by a specialist, to make sure it is not counter-productive. That is why a HEALTHY AND REGULAR training will beneficial and enriching.
You can find a link to my online classroom, especially to my CONSCIOUS BREATHING classes, where items 2 and 3 of the advices on how to perform a flutter are dealt with actively and with love.
Perform your tip with fluffy belly!!
TIP Nº4: LET THE GRAVITY BE YOUR FRIEND!
Now, let’s introduce an important factor: while practicing, my advice is to try different ways and postures: lying down, on all fours, sitting or standing… the most favorable one, gravity-wise is on all fours, or any other that keeps the belly relaxed.
In addition, this makes your muscles release and relax, as also, the gravity affects less, and you can perceive all the work you are doing easier. Do not despair!
TIP Nº5: PRACTICE YOUR FLUTTER IN MOVEMENT
And finally, if you have reached the last advice, in the first place, I want to thank you. I would also like to tell you that it is very interesting to try and do the flutter in combination with other movements: combos, choreographic variations, movement phrases, improvisations…
This way you will be able to integrate it “naturally” in your regular practice and it will help you train this movement and get it ready for the performance.
Finally yet importantly, if you want to delve into the mysteries (there is still some) and final technique of performing this beautiful and irresistible movement, I will tell you all about it and we will practice at my next workshop! In conclusion: be happy while dancing dear!!
