I have a memory of always wanting to travel to India. Truthfully, genuinely and dazzlingly, India was always on my mind. I remember saying it out loud and getting odd looks, met with surprise and even disapproval. However, I was always determined with my answer – my dream was to travel to India. I’m talking about a recurring memory, which I made true more than a decade ago.
It absolutely changed my life and my career forever.
India is a country full of contrasts, I realized that with every step I took. Similarly to the way I see my very dance form, imbued with contrasts and nuances – my pedagogy of contemporary dance studies background, enmeshed with the codified language and the intricate details of the Classical Indian Dance.
India is an Ode to the tradition and its celebration. This is something my studies are rooted in, and something I want to project in each and every one of my classes and dances. This tradition dates back to thousands of years ago, defining its culture, its context and therefore the society and the dance forms.
India is overflowed with spirituality and faith. I have learned to handle this meaningful movement element carefully when creating my fusion. Sanctifying the space we are about to live in, as well as our body, our intention and our spirit.
There are many different ‘Indias’ and realities in ‘India’. Depending on the area you go to, you may think it’s arid and has gypsy traditions. You may also find lush nature where the classical arts are a very important part of the cultural and social context. Or perhaps you may see a fast paced India, shielded by the Ganges as the driving force of the society, and ancestral traditions …
I love seeing my own dance as ‘many dances’. I am someone who LOVES studying and training. I’ve always felt a drive to research and discover new passions. I have been studying this art form professionally for twenty years. I have had some amazing teachers while studying different dance styles:
- Afrobrazillian
- Classical Oriental (Raks Sharki)
- Tribal Fusion Dance
- Contemporary Dance
- Persian Dance and Sufi Whirling
- Classical Indian Odissi Dance
- Indian Folklore Kalbelia Dance
…
Each one of these dances dwells within me, shaping the fusion that defines me as a dancer, which I want to share with you: the IndOriental® Dance.
Would you like to have this experience and feel all of this on your own body?
I would like to give you a present, a little piece of the India that mesmerized me so many years ago, so you can feel it as your own.
